I think what rbgupta meant that the song was supposed to be picturised on Mukri and it was decided to picturised on Dev Anand.

Devanand is not known for acting out such a song, but I still can't fathom this gem of a song, full of pathos, pain, and a host of other emotions, being picturized on Mukri. MUKRI, the comedian? Just plain incredible.

Notice how the subdued beats of the tabla are matched by the expressions and movements of Devanand and Nalini J. And compare this with the mujra's of later years with women in garish make-up, men chewing paan, loud instruments drowning out the lyrics (whatever little meaning they carry), lewd acting etc. And then the grace of this song!! To top it all, Dev Anand pulling off a mujra!! Just incredible.
