food and fodder for their poems. What a telling judgement on the ineptitude

evils. Another movie that handled a similar theme - though in an entirely
different angle - was the hollywood classic " Taxi Driver ", the former
movie predated the latter by nearly two decades.

the other ( taxi driver ) is an ex-soldier. there cannot be any difference
that can be more striking. And predictably the soldier takes the law into
his hands and goes temporarily berserk. Whereas this movie the poet is
grieved and as a consequence starts brooding intensely. A great classic by
SD and Rafi . Last but not least the poet - Sahir . Gurudutt is perfect as

Illustrated weekly Of India many years before making the movie. I never
read the original story. I think the poetry of Sahir ludhianvi made this
movie very appealing. Did anyone read the original story written by Guru
Dutt? Or can anyone help me to get that story?

orientlover1 on Friday, November 12, 2010 @Taharah007 The poem is entitled "Chakle" meaning Brothels. Had been published in Sahir Ludhianvi's book Talkhian (Bitternesses). Some words/lines were changed for simplicity and film requirements. Two stanzas were completely omitted. The poet laments the plights of women pushed into the sordid business of prostitution and chides the leaders for their passive attitude towards this great human tragedy. Exact translation of this unique work into English will require considerable skill.
